Structure of the 2-subject Bachelor's degree programme in Chemistry

The 2-subject Bachelor's degree programme in Chemistry + X gives you the opportunity to study two subjects at the same time. This is a combined degree programme in which there is no major or minor subject. In addition to Chemistry, you choose another subject at RUB, which is offered as a 2-subject Bachelor's programme.

The first two semesters of the Chemistry degree programme are devoted to general and inorganic chemistry. In addition to the lectures and exercises, the Chemistry degree programme at Ruhr-Universität Bochum is characterised by a high practical component. Each semester includes various laboratory practicals that are specially designed for students on the 2-subject Bachelor of Chemistry programme. Analytical and organic chemistry await you in the 3rd and 4th semesters. In the last two semesters of your degree programme, you will focus on physical chemistry, biochemistry and spectroscopy before embarking on your Bachelor's thesis. You can write your thesis in chemistry and your second subject.

One advantage of the 2-subject Bachelor's degree in Chemistry + X is the optional area, which is firmly integrated into the degree programme. In addition to your specialised knowledge from the two subjects, you also have the opportunity to learn key qualifications such as presentation techniques, IT and language skills - important for your future career.

Requirements

The most important thing is an enjoyment of and interest in chemistry and the natural sciences in general. Certain previous knowledge or internships are not a prerequisite, but will make it easier to start your studies. An open mind for complex interrelationships, precise observation and experimentation, logical and analytical thinking and critical scrutiny of results are also an advantage on the way to a successful degree. Compared to school, the learning curve is much steeper - not only in terms of complexity, but also in terms of scope. Perseverance, motivation and the joy of learning will help you. As you are studying two subjects at the same time, it helps if you have good time management skills and can organise yourself well. This will help you keep track of your studies. In the end, you will not only gain important professional qualifications and key skills for your future career, but also a degree that will open up a wide range of opportunities for you.

2-subject vs. 1-subject Bachelor of Chemistry?

The 2-subject Bachelor's degree in Chemistry + X gives you the opportunity not only to pursue your interest in chemistry, but also to study another subject of equal value. If you want to work as a teacher later on, this degree course is exactly the right preparation. On the chemistry course, you will learn all the important basics in lectures and tutorials and test your skills in laboratory practicals. Thanks to the wide range of optional courses on offer, you can also acquire key qualifications that will be an advantage in a Master's degree course or in professional life. You will complete your studies with a Bachelor of Arts.

If you opt for a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, you will delve deeper into the field of chemistry. The Bachelor of Science focuses on the scientific aspect of the course and, in addition to specialist skills, teaches you the ability to plan, process and evaluate comprehensive specialist tasks and problems, as well as a critical understanding of the most important theories and methods of chemistry.

2-subject Bachelor of Chemistry - and then?

Most graduates of a 2-subject Bachelor's degree in Chemistry + X opt for a Master's degree programme, especially a Master of Education - a teaching degree programme. When selecting the subject combination, the Master's phase should therefore be kept in mind, as there are not suitable Master's programmes for all subject combinations. It is also possible to join the Master of Science Chemistry programme. Early planning during the last two Bachelor's semesters helps to ensure a seamless transition from the Bachelor's to the Master's programme. The Student Advisory Service and the Examinations Office provide advice and support at this point.
