Features
The Master of Education Chemistry programme at Ruhr-Universität Bochum combines three special features:
Comprehensive specialised didactic training
The chemistry lessons of the future are diverse. In order to shape it, students need a sound basic education in the subject, but also in didactics. On the basis of basic didactic concepts, theories and models as well as knowledge of the use of traditional and digital media in chemistry lessons, students learn step by step how to plan, implement and reflect on motivating learning situations. Questions about dealing with heterogeneity as well as education for sustainable development play a role here.
The acquisition of competence in school experiments
Experiments are the centrepiece of chemistry lessons. Their targeted use, their diverse functions and the actual execution of school experiments pose particular challenges for many teachers. The module ‘Acquiring competence in school experiments’ prepares you specifically for teaching process-orientated skills in chemistry lessons.
The Alfried Krupp School Science Laboratory as an extracurricular learning centre for students
To become a chemistry teacher, you need space to try things out. In the student laboratory, you can test your own teaching skills during your studies and develop them further at this established learning centre until you start your career.
Structure
The didactic courses in the Master of Education programme aim to increasingly interlink theory and practice.
In the first semester, the lecture ‘Didactics of Chemistry’ introduces the basic didactic terms, concepts and contexts on a theoretical level. In the seminar ‘Media in Chemistry Teaching’, the theoretical principles of numerous media are applied to practical examples relevant to schools. In the seminar and accompanying practical course ‘Chemische Schulexperimente I’ (Chemical School Experiments I), students learn about a well-founded selection of school experiments from all learning areas of the SI and SII in theory and practice.
In the second semester, the focus is on linking theory and practice ‘under laboratory conditions’. In the seminar and accompanying practical course ‘The school laboratory as an extracurricular place of learning’, students test, analyse and reflect on the teaching of chemistry content to pupils in the Alfried Krupp School Laboratory of Science. In the seminar and accompanying internship ‘Chemische Schulexperimente II’ (Chemical School Experiments II), they further develop experiments under selected school-relevant questions. The preparatory seminar for the practical semester explicitly focuses on questions of lesson planning and lesson analysis.
In the third semester, they then go into the field. Here, students expand the knowledge and skills they have acquired by observing and analysing the teaching units of experienced teachers during the practical semester and designing, carrying out and reflecting on numerous teaching experiments of their own. They are supported by the corresponding accompanying seminar and the constant opportunity for counselling at the Chair of Chemistry Didactics.
In the fourth semester, students complete their Master's thesis in the subject, in subject didactics or in educational science. They work independently on an experimental, conceptual or empirical question and deepen their knowledge of scientific methodology.
Application and admission
Application and admissionFor enrolment in the Master of Education, a mandatory counselling interview must be completed. It is mandatory for those with a Bachelor's degree from Ruhr-Universität as well as for those with a Bachelor's degree from other universities. The counselling interview is conducted by the student advisory service responsible for the Master of Education. Attendance is then certified.
Admission requirements
The admission requirements for the Master of Education in Chemistry can be found in the currently valid examination regulations.
You will also need a certificate from the Professional School of Education confirming that you fulfil the admission requirements.
Master of Education - and then?
With a Master of Education from Ruhr-Universität Bochum, you have a wide range of options. Most often, graduates opt for a future as a teacher at secondary schools (grammar schools, comprehensive schools, vocational colleges) by first completing their traineeship and then accepting a teaching position. However, there are also other options outside of school. These include jobs in the editorial department of textbook publishers or educational media publishers as well as public relations work. A doctorate in specialised didactics or subject science is also an interesting follow-up option, regardless of whether you decide to pursue a career at school or university afterwards.
