Requirements

Good grades in chemistry, maths, biology and English; keen interest in scientific work in a laboratory, good dexterity, technical understanding and the ability to work responsibly both in a team and independently

General areas of responsibility:

As a chemical laboratory technician, you will work in small and large laboratories in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry, as well as at colleges and universities. Your main tasks will include:

  • Planning, carrying out and optimising experimental procedures
  • Preparative chemistry: carrying out inorganic and organic syntheses
  • Analytical chemistry: analysing samples both qualitatively and quantitatively using modern computer-aided measuring devices
  • Analysing and documenting test and measurement results
  • Separating mixtures of substances and purifying synthesis products
  • Working with hazardous substances
  • Implementing quality assurance, occupational, environmental and health protection measures Environmentally friendly disposal of hazardous substances

During the 3.5-year training period, chemical laboratory technicians are taught the knowledge and skills they will need later in their careers. This initially includes basic knowledge, which is emphasised in your first and second year of training and is taught both theoretically and practically:Working safely in the laboratory

  • Working safely in the laboratory
  • General and inorganic chemistry
  • Organic chemistry
  • Carrying out stoichiometric calculations
  • Planning and evaluating different analyses

Vocational school

You will attend the Stadtmitte vocational college in Mülheim an der Ruhr for theoretical training. There you will be prepared for your future career in two blocks of approx. 6 weeks per training year in subjects such as laboratory technology, economics and business studies, analysis technology or synthesis technology.

After the apprenticeship

After completing the final examination part 1, you will have the opportunity to actively participate in current research work in various working groups at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry. In the individual working groups, which have a wide variety of research specialisations, you will be taught the following 6 elective skills:

  1. Preparative chemistry: reaction types and management
  2. Preparative chemistry: synthesis techniques
  3. Spectroscopy
  4. Chromatography
  5. Carrying out microbiological work
  6. Technical application work
