Brief Description

Prof. Günther-Pomorski's research group focusses on the cells of plants, animals and humans. These have a complex system of different membranes that enable intracellular compartmentalisation. Each membrane consists of a lipid bilayer and embedded proteins that fulfil numerous essential functions. Channels and transporters control the transport of ions, lipids and metabolites. Receptors are involved in signalling, which detect changes in the cellular environment and initiate cell-specific responses. Disturbances in the cellular transport and signalling systems often cause serious diseases in humans. The aim of the research work is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of transport systems and signalling transduction.
